Information
Ericsson and Qualcomm have successfully completed a new 5G milestone that was conducted in the Swedish telecom firm’s lab.
During this testing period, commercial Ericsson Radio System base stations were used, along with Ericsson standalone New Radio (NR) software and Ericsson’s 5G Cloud Core solution with a mobile smartphone form-factor test device that was powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System.
The testing, which complied to the international 3GPP 5G NR specifications, highlights the companies’ determination to support the second phase of 5G commercialisation with standalone deployments that utilise a new 5G core network to provide more 5G capabilities, including guaranteed quality of service and network slicing to support incipient business models in Industrial IoT and enterprise-grade cloud services.
Last month, this publication reported on Ericsson’s first 5G standalone data session with T-Mobile conducted in the US. During the session, T-Mobile used products from Ericsson’s Radio System portfolio, namely the Ericsson’s AIR 6488 radio and Baseband 6630, which can become standalone with just a software update.
According to Ericsson, Standalone New Radio (SA NR) – coupled with cloud-native 5G core – will greatly help in powering new applications such as mobile virtual reality (VR), cloud gaming, and connected cars.
